Growing up in a military family I never developed a solid group of friends until my father retired and we settled down. That's when I discovered D&D.
The group I first started playing with were in the middle of a campaign when I joined and were in no mood to teach me how to play.
After a good amount of pleading they allowed me to take control of an NPC character. His name was Patsie. He had no level, no abilities beyond carrying everybody's equipment, and seemed to serve no purpose.
I'm sure they gave him to me just to shut me up, but I was enamored with the game and played Patsie to my greatest ability.
